Key things to know before you travel across Asia.
Best Time to Visit
Asia spans tropical and temperate climates. SE Asia is best NovโFeb (dry season). Japan peaks in spring (cherry blossom, MarchโApril) and autumn. Central Asia is ideal MayโSeptember.
Currency & Payments
Cash is still king in much of Southeast Asia and Central Asia. Japan is rapidly becoming cashless. Always carry local currency for markets and street food.
Connectivity
Grab local SIM cards at airports โ data is cheap across most of Asia. China requires a VPN for Western apps. South Korea and Japan have excellent eSIM options.
Visas
Requirements vary enormously โ Japan and Malaysia are visa-free for most Western passports, while India, China, and Uzbekistan require visas. Always check 2โ3 months before travel.
Getting Around
Rail networks are world-class in Japan, China, and India. Grab (ride-hailing) covers most of SE Asia. Domestic flights are often the smartest option for long distances in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Culture & Etiquette
Dress modestly when visiting temples and mosques. Remove shoes at many homes and shrines. Bargaining is normal at markets across SE Asia and Central Asia โ not in Japan or Singapore.
