Land of the Rising Sun

Japan sits at the intersection of ancient tradition and cutting-edge modernity. An archipelago of over 6,800 islands, it pairs a millennia-old culture of poetry, ceremony, and craft with bullet trains, robot restaurants, and some of the world’s most innovative cities.

From the snow-dusted peaks of the Japanese Alps and the bamboo groves of Arashiyama to the glowing torii gates of Fushimi Inari and the coastal drama of the Sanriku coast, every region offers a distinct and deeply intentional aesthetic experience.

Japan holds one of the world’s strongest passports, offering visa-free access to 193+ destinations. Entry requirements for visitors vary significantly by nationality — use the visa lookup tool below to find your exact status before booking.

Step by Step

How to Apply for a Japan Visa

The standard process for short-stay tourism visas through the Embassy or JVAC. Allow at least 2–3 weeks before your travel date.

1
Prepare all required documents
Gather your valid passport (6+ months validity, 2 blank pages), completed visa application form (available in English, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish), passport photos, confirmed hotel bookings for every night, a full itinerary, return air ticket, and 3–6 months of bank statements. If invited by an organisation, your guarantor sends the invitation letter and Letter of Guarantee directly to you — not to MOFA.
2
Book your appointment at the Embassy or JVAC
Applications are submitted at the Embassy of Japan or a Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC) in your country. Check the relevant JVAC or Embassy website for current booking methods and operating hours. Visa applications cannot be made inside Japan.
3
Attend the appointment and submit biometrics
An in-person appearance is required for biometric data (fingerprints and photograph). Submit all documents at this appointment. Additional documents may be requested on a case-by-case basis. Dress neatly — it can affect the impression you make.
4
Wait for processing — approximately one week
Standard processing takes approximately one week once all requirements are correctly submitted. In complex cases, or where the Embassy needs to consult MOFA in Tokyo, processing may take longer. Apply early — allow 3 weeks minimum, 5 weeks during cherry blossom season and Golden Week.
5
Collect your passport and visa sticker
Collect your passport with the visa sticker from the JVAC or Embassy. Check all details — name, passport number, validity, and entry type — before leaving. A visa does not guarantee entry; final admission is decided by the immigration officer at the Japanese port of entry.
Documents

What to Bring for Your Application

Valid Passport
Minimum 6 months’ validity beyond your stay. At least 2 blank pages. Bring original plus a photocopy of the bio page.
Completed Visa Application Form
Download the official MOFA form (available in English and other languages). Fill using Adobe Acrobat Reader and print. Personal seals are no longer required on Letters of Guarantee.
Passport Photo (Biometric Standard)
White background, forward-facing, no glasses, taken within the last 6 months. Dimensions per MOFA requirements — typically 45mm × 45mm.
Full Itinerary & Accommodation Bookings
Japan requires a detailed day-by-day itinerary and hotel bookings for every night of the stay. Use the MOFA “Itinerary in Japan” downloadable form — free-form documents are less accepted.
Return Air Ticket (Confirmed)
A confirmed return or onward ticket is required. Flight dates must align with hotel bookings. If plans are flexible, use a refundable booking.
Bank Statements & Proof of Funds
3–6 months of bank statements. Japan doesn’t publish a fixed minimum, but officers look for consistent income or savings sufficient to cover the full trip.
Letter of Guarantee (if invited)
If invited by a Japanese individual or organisation, a Letter of Guarantee and Invitation Letter are required. The guarantor sends these to you — not to the Embassy.
Travel Insurance (Strongly Recommended)
Not mandatory but highly advised. Medical costs in Japan can be significant without coverage. MOFA explicitly recommends overseas travel medical insurance on its visa page.
💡 Japan Visa Tips
  • Apply at least 3 weeks before travel — 5 weeks in peak cherry blossom and Golden Week season
  • Fill accommodation for every single night — gaps are a common rejection reason
  • Use MOFA’s official “Itinerary in Japan” form — free-form documents are less accepted
  • Bank statements must be originals or certified — screenshots are not accepted
  • Buy a JR Pass before leaving your home country — it cannot be purchased inside Japan
  • Get an IC card (Suica / Pasmo) at the airport for seamless transit in Tokyo
⚠️ Common Rejection Reasons

Incomplete itinerary (missing hotel nights), insufficient bank balance, inconsistent employment documentation, prior overstays anywhere, gaps between booked flights and hotel dates, or application submitted too close to the travel date. Japan visa officers are thorough — complete every field.

📢
2025–2026 Updates
Japan has introduced three new visa categories: the J-Skip (Special Highly Skilled Professional), J-Find (Future Creation Individual), and a Digital Nomad visa. The eVisa system has expanded to 9 countries. UAE visa-free period extended (June 2025). Paraguay added to visa-waiver list (May 2025). Monitor mofa.go.jp for the latest updates.
When to Go

Best Time to Visit Japan

Japan has four very distinct seasons, each with its own spectacle. Spring cherry blossom and autumn foliage are the two peak seasons — extraordinary to experience, but plan well ahead. Summer brings dramatic festivals; winter delivers snow country and illuminations. Every season has its advocates.

Spring
March – May
Cherry blossom peaks late March to mid-April. Peak demand — apply for your visa early and book accommodation months ahead.
Summer
June – August
Hot, humid, and festival-filled. Gion Matsuri in Kyoto (July) and the fireworks season are unmissable. Avoid Golden Week crowds.
Autumn
October – November
Maple foliage rivals cherry blossom in beauty. Crisp, clear days make it ideal for photography. Second peak season — plan ahead.
Winter
December – February
Snow festivals in Sapporo, world-class skiing in Niseko. Quieter cities, lower hotel rates, and spectacular light-ups across Tokyo.

Common Questions

Japan Visa FAQ

How do I know if I need a visa for Japan?
Over 193 nationalities can enter Japan visa-free for short stays. Check the visa lookup tool at the top of this section or visit mofa.go.jp for the authoritative list. If your nationality is not on the visa-exempt list, you’ll need to apply through the Japanese Embassy or a JVAC in your country before travelling.
Can I use Japan’s online eVisa system? +
As of 2026, Japan’s online eVisa is available for residents of 9 countries: Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. If you hold one of these passports, you can apply fully online without an embassy visit. MOFA is expanding the programme — check the official page for the latest list.
How long does Japan visa processing take? +
Standard processing takes approximately 5–7 business days once all required documents are correctly submitted. In complex cases where the Embassy needs to consult MOFA in Tokyo, processing may take longer. Apply at least 3 weeks before your intended travel date — 5 weeks during peak seasons such as cherry blossom (late March–April) and Golden Week (late April–early May).
Does Japan require a full day-by-day itinerary? +
Yes. Japan’s tourist visa application requires a detailed daily itinerary including confirmed hotel bookings for every night of your stay. MOFA provides an official downloadable “Itinerary in Japan” form for this purpose. Missing hotel nights or vague plans are among the most common reasons for visa delays or refusals. Flexible travellers should book refundable hotels and note their confirmation numbers on the form.
Is a return ticket required for the Japan visa application? +
Yes, a confirmed return or onward ticket is required. It must align with the dates on your hotel bookings and itinerary. One-way flights invite additional scrutiny from visa officers — a refundable return ticket is the safest approach for flexible itineraries.
What new visa categories has Japan introduced? +
Japan introduced three new visa types in 2024–2025. The J-Skip visa (Special Highly Skilled Professional) targets top-tier international talent. The J-Find visa (Designated Activities — Future Creation Individual) is for graduates of top-ranked universities exploring employment in Japan. The Digital Nomad visa allows remote workers to live in Japan for up to 6 months. All are applied for through the standard Embassy or JVAC route.
Can I extend my stay once I’m in Japan? +
Extensions to a short-stay visa are possible but not guaranteed. You must apply at a regional immigration office in Japan before your current permission expires. Extensions are typically granted for compelling reasons such as illness or unavoidable circumstances — not for tourism. Overstaying your permitted period has serious consequences including bans on future entry to Japan.
